‘Advent Retreat’ - Yoga, Mindfulness & Resilience with Frank Schmid & Tanja Forcellini at Sutra House

Especially in turbulent times, it is important to take breaks in life, to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life, to know how to strengthen the own resilience, thereby remaining physically and mentally resilient and healthy.

This extended weekend in Riehen near Basel allows Yoga beginners as well as experienced Yogis to alike to take an active break from everyday life, to deepen their Yoga and Meditation practice and to learn everyday exercises about mindfulness and resilience, in order to integrate them into everyday life.

Especially during the winter months, it is important to cultivate self-care and mindfulness in everyday life, to know how to strengthen the own resilience, thereby remaining physically and mentally resilient and healthy, and to take regular pauses.

This extended weekend in Riehen near Basel allows Yoga beginners as well as experienced Yogis to take an active break from everyday life, to deepen their Yoga and Meditation practice and to learn exercises about mindfulness, resilience, and self-care, in order to integrate them into everyday life. And this in combination with healthy nutrition and plenty of rest.

Every morning we explore our body and mind with mindfulness exercises and meditation, then revitalize ourselves with Yoga. Afterwards, we enjoy a high-quality brunch made from regional products as much as possible. In the afternoon there is time to enjoy the sauna and the steam bath to relax our muscles and unwind. The schedule also includes enough free time for walks or a visit to a nearby museum or enjoy a massage/energy session. We end the day with resilience and breathing exercises and cooling, deeply relaxing Yin Yoga. Over a vegetarian dinner, we let the experience resonate and take effect.

All classes will be taught in German, alternating between Frank (Yoga classes) and Tanja (Meditation, Mindfulness, and Resilience). Both teachers are fluent in English and German, for questions or exchange outside of class times.

This nourishing extended weekend will be offered from Thursday afternoon, December 1, through Sunday noon, December 4, 2022 at Sutra House in Riehen near Basel in Switzerland. 

The teachers
Frank Schmid started growing in the Swiss Alps, then Zurich, New York and San Francisco. He lived in Vancouver, Canada, for 10 years. He received his Hatha Yoga teacher training from Ifat Erez in Canada and at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, India and he studied Yin Yoga with Paul Grilley.
Frank’s daily practice reflects in his classes which he leads with a strong sense for detail, individual safety and fun. For those who take his classes, it is a quiet lesson in self-exploration, opening up body and soul to accept and work through the practice, which at times mirrors the challenges of life.

Tanja Forcellini discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga during one of her journeys to the Far East in 1999. Yoga has led her to find answers to the many questions she has encountered on her personal life journey - answers that lay hidden deep within herself. Tanja attended the Yoga Teacher Training in 2004 at Centered Yoga in Asia, where she received certification as a Yoga instructor recognized by the Yoga Alliance. After her pregnancy in 2008, she also attended the Perinatal Yoga Training at Birthlight UK. After that time, life guided her more and more towards silence, and silence moved her from Yoga to Meditation. The loving and conscious contact with, and careful perception of one's own body are the focus of Tanja's classes, as well as the connection of breath and movement. In addition, she completed the Hormone Balance Teacher Training with Salome Noah. Tanja regularly attends trainings on mindfulness meditation and resilience and is currently in training as an energetic practitioner with Andrea Stäger.

The Sutra House
Opened beginning of 2020, the Sutra House is a space for Meditation, Yoga, Nutrition, Therapy and Healing Arts, a sanctuary where one can re-connect to the inner life and explore the “nature of things”.  
Set into a forested hillside near above the Rhine valley and village of Riehen, Switzerland, the Sutra House has been designed by the Basel architect Nicolas Hünerwadel in close collaboration with AIRYOGA teacher Stephen Thomas. The space consists of an old, converted part and a modern new building elegantly connected to it.
The spacious Yoga room on the ground floor, the sky-lit meditation room under the high roof with large open views to the east and west for sunrise and sunset as well as the gathering/salon room with fireplace form the core zones of the house.
Besides Yoga and healthy food, a sauna, a steam bath, massages/energy sessions, walks in the forest and a lot of coziness await you in this beautifully decorated house with a crackling fireplace and a library, with a great selection of books on Yoga and spirituality.

During our stay the Sutra House is exclusively at our disposal.

The Sutra House in Riehen near Basel is easily accessible by car and public transport. Participants will receive directions on how to get there.

Up to 14 participants can be accommodated in double and single rooms. Shared rooms on request. The tastefully furnished rooms are all flooded with light and have their own bathroom.

Daily Schedule (subject to modifications)
7:15 a.m.: Tea and snack
7:30 to 8:30 a.m.: Mindfulness and Meditation with Tanja
8:45 to 10:15 a.m.: Dynamic Yoga with Frank
10:30 a.m: Brunch
afterwards free time (resting, sauna, steam bath, massage, museum, walking, energy session etc.)
3:45 p.m.: Tea and light snack
4:15 to 6:45 p.m.: Resilience, Breathing and Yoga
7:00 p.m.: Dinner

Massages / Treatments
Sutra House offers various massages. In addition, Tanja offers individual sessions in energy work during this weekend. These are not included in the price and are paid directly on site.

Check-in / Check-out
Participants can check in as from 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022. All participants are expected at 4:00 p.m. at the latest for the welcome round, the first Yoga class and the following opening dinner.
On Sunday, December 4, 2022 the retreat ends after the morning Yoga class and brunch; latest release of the rooms is at 12:00 p.m..

If one/both teachers is/are unable to lead the retreat due to unforeseen circumstances, we reserve the right to replace the teacher/s with equivalent one(s).

Insurance is your own responsibility. We strongly recommend a travel insurance including coverage of cancellation costs and travel incidents.

AIRYOGA/yogatanja and the teachers shall not be held liable for any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to persons. The participant waives any claim against the facilitator/the teacher for any such loss, damage, injury, or death.
